What is the approximate cost (per minute, say) of licensing videos?
I ask because some people may want to take our videos to use in their commercial organisations and we have no clue what to charge them.
Anyone any ideas?
Thanks.

No real answer, it all depends on what its worth. Are you giving them full rights, limited rights. Too many varibles not enough info.

I don't know the first thing about the subject, I'm sorry.
We have only just started making videos (at AVForums videos) and prior to releasing our first video we have had manufacturers asking us the cost of licensing the video(s) (we recently shot at a public show) for their own use.
They might want to use the videos for any reason within their company e.g. for training or promotion.
I think that Your daily home-theater and hifi news make a fair portion of their income from licensing their videos but I'm not going to be so rude to ask them what they charge.
Some kind of ballpark figure for a video covering manufacturers' new products lasting between 5 and 10 minutes is what we need. I think it should be a 4 figure number, but what exactly, I don't know.
Varies from peanuts to coconuts.
I got 50 quid 3 years ago for a 20 second clip sold to local tv news, I think I was robbed!
So for a professional video, would you say £500 plus £200 per minute would be fair? Or maybe £250 per minute?
All I know is rough rates for mews footage - £100 up per min for local network, £300 to 500 national, £500 up for international.
That would be limtited rights to show limited number of times within a specified period.
This info is what I have gleened rather than something from a rate card or document.
Haggling is the operative word i think.
Thanks Mark. By the way, is there a thread anywhere where you defend your anti-HDV stance for consumer camcorders? I would like to argue for it![]()
Cool! Start a thread - it is a subject worthy of debate.
