I am really intrigued to know if anyone has any ideas how they achieved the whole cartoon look to this film?

of course that tutorial assume you have rather specific s/w. A lot of it is dressing and prep. Illustrator CS2 does the 'magic' that is not available in Illustrator CS or earlier.
