I've got 6 posts sitting on the forums that seem to have reached their sell by date -- Is it worth deleting them and freeing up space on the pages. and if so how do I go about it -- Or is it worth leaving them as they are in case someone comes along at a later date with a similar problem ??

Why delete them? They don't take up space, like files on a hard drive (or at least not significant space) and besides, someone might find them useful one day.
The text sits within a database table, ready to be called whenever someone requests the information. It's an integral part of user to user forums that every post with a technical answer is kept.
