Confusing Jargon

From a popular UK PC magazine:

"Each frame of TV may only have a fairly minimal 720x576 resolution, but with 25 frames every second the throughput required would be 20MB/s without compression".

Reading further...

"...the DV format has a standard data rate of 25MB/s, which equates to around 5:1 compression".

Can someone explain this to me? I assume they've confused Megabytes with Megabits?

To answer my question, they should have said "the DV format has a standard bitrate of 25Mbps (or 3.6MB/s)

High Def
DVD

The bitrate of DV and HDV are exactly the same at 25Mbit/s. Why the same? Well HDV uses higher compression

Oh and the DVD standard sets the maximum video bitrate of 8Mbit/s.

to be honest i dont like the word " Compression"

Watching a film on Sky Digital the other night, poor disgital blocking, the compression was atchieved by If the pixel does not move theres not need to re draw it, when you get lots of dark in one area, this looks awful.

Watching The Dukes of Hazard in old anolouge last night on a 8 foot screen, the picture looked active and not just when Daisy was about either.

A good compression algorithm and the right settings should mean the viewer sees little or no difference in quality...
