I've got the video gallery up and running, now it's time to decide how to encode the video (oh, and to get some videos up). I figure it's gonna have to be MPEG4 (yes, I know it will have to be converted to edit decently, but this is free!), and I was thinking of http://www.3ivx.com/download/windows.html |

Why that, and not the completely free (and better supported) xvid?

Purely personal, but I've never been a great fan of encoding with Xvid - and especially not recommending it to noobs as the default encoding options are bewildering.
Just personal preference really!

DivX? The free versions no longer have spyware/adware in them.

They're all completely valid, if you ask me.
However, Xvid has really grown on me as of late.

Also, I haven't used DivX in a long while...does that stupid watermark still show up on the finished product?

It does, but it's not actually encoded into the video - it's the software that adds it during playback for the first few seconds.
It is possible to disable, but I can't remember how. (i'm still using version 4)

divx is still proprietary, and not free in either sense of the word.
Bivx is as well.
There's so much stuff out there that supports xvid, that it'll be supported forever now.

Agreed. I download a lot of television using Bit Torrent, and almost all of it is in Xvid format. I have had no problems with it at all.
