Default DV-25 vs MPEG-2

Hi
I want to convert my old VHS tapes to DVD.
I would like the compression in HW (free up the PC) - assume ext device.
As I understand there are at least two broad options:

1] MPEG-2 via USB-2
2] DV-25/50(?) via Firewire (convert to MPEG-2 in PC after editing ..).

Are the any guidelines as to the above two options (quality, rendering time, recoding etc)?

Thanks
Andre
