Many thanks Marc. Seems like the ideal compromise for me between my professional experience and my pensioners pocket!

This question is for Danny DeLoach:
My camcorder is burning straight to DVD in mpeg-2 then transfered to my PC. I will start editing those very shortly and I am looking for a software which can edit those. I have learn from this post that converting them to AVI is much better for editing (especially with Adb Permiere Element) but is there a software outhere that can do the job for mpeg-2? Likeyou mentioned erlier, converting them into avi takes lots of spaces.
Also, what tool do you recommend the most for converting mpeg-2 into DV-AVI format
Thanks

Hi! I'm new here. I'm in the process of trying to choose a video editing program. I've tried the trial version of ULead. It's so-so. What I'm really interested in is Premier Elements.
Since I'm a looooong time user of Adobe products, I think I would really like Premier Elements. There is one thing that is stopping me from buying it. I've read dozens of reviews and specs on it, but none of them tell me what I'm most interested in.........color correction. I have some video clips that are dark or need color balancing. I need to be able to color adjust them...........and preferably not with an "automated" color correction option.
Does Premier Elements offer you the option to do your own color corrections in the same way that Photoshop does? Can you manually adjust contrast, brightness, color balance, etc?
Thanks so much for your help!!

Yes, it has some auto correctors, as well as highlights, shadows and mid tone adjustments. You can also alter the RGB channels independently and it has something called Temporal Smoothing which can be set to monitor a number of seconds of video either side of where you apply it to take into consideration how much a clip should be color adjusted.
I don't have access to the software now but maybe Marc could comment on how well these features perform (I think he has a copy). I guess though that they are pretty standard.

Having now had my copy of Elements for a week I can confirm that it has just about all the filters and adjustments that the full sized version has - and thats even more than Photoshop Elements!
The main differences I can find between Elements and 6.5 Premiere are only one monitor window (slip and slide editing and quick trimming are sacrificed), a track cannot be turned off (means using "enable" to temporary hide a clip) and there are far fewer tools in the timeline.
Having said that, I am extremely happy with it's capabilities and find it by far the best "cheap" package.

Thanks for the great information! It helped me make my decision. I've purchased Premiere Elements and have been very happy with it!
My main concern had been the ability to manually color-correct my videos. I'm rarely happy with auto-corrections. Premiere Elements let's me do precisely what I needed to do. I highly recommend it!
Thanks again for the help!

Hi, I am new here and to Video editing. Just wanted to let you know people read these forums and use the info. I read your review and appriciate the time you took. I used it to sort thru the amazing amount of video software available on the shelves to make my descision.
I agree with your assesments and find premier elements to be very nice and meets all my expectations. Maybe because I already use Adobe PhotoShop CS but I find it easy enough to use. I especially like your mention of the 7 to 1 Burn time in your review. A 2 hour DVD can take 14 hours to burn. This might have made me wonder as to whether the program was hung.
Thanks from across the Pond. |
