Default How to avoid the usual newbie questions

To prevent the usual: "my quality isn't what I expect" question, we could add a few "quick start" guides to encoding using various applications. Perhpas along the lines of this - http://www.marcpeters.co.uk/dr-divx.html. I'm looking to expand marcpeters.co.uk, so don't mind writing the guides myself. But I do need input on what applications people use.

My initial thought is that I would start with a guide on what codecs should be used for different scenarious: wmv for internet etc etc. Then write a seperate sticky in each of the forums explaining how to encode to each format.

So please post what application you use to encode
