Default widescreen

I want to shoot a project to be burned to dvd and displayed on a widescreen television. My camera is a j.v.c DV5000 which has a 16:9 setting but it isn't true 16:9 so any footage shot in this mode is simply blown up (black bars and all) and stretched to fill the screen (which is of course, hopeless). What is my best option for overcoming this? scaling the footage up in the edit?

Thanks in advance
