I normally encode SVCDs at the standard 480x480 resolution, but my current project needs more resolution. Is it possible to use a higher resolution at the cost of time? If not, would it be possible to make a DVD image and, as long as it is small enough, burn it to a normal CD? Thanks for the info.

i think you can use 480x576 which will reduce the duration to 35 mins.

Thanks for the replies. How about my idea of creating a DVD image that is 700mb or less and burning that to a CD? Technically it would be in the right format and all, just not as much space/time.

This is called a miniDVD and is compatible with only a handful of players.

Actually a mini-DVD to my knowledge was the 3" DVD used in many camcorders and such. I am talking about using a regular-size CD and just burning a DVD image to it.

Which is referred to as a miniDVD.

the minidvd you're thinking of is only really known as minidvd by disney and the other few companies that have marketed the minidvd players. It's a bloomin' rip-off if you ask me.

Well I work at a Best Buy (temp-job, I do IT stuff but the field sucks where I am at right now) down here and we have a dozen or so Sony and Panasonic camcorders that record to a 3" DVD that they call a "Mini-DVD". I didn't know that you could actually record DVD-data to a 700mb CD and that was also called a "Mini-DVD". The bad things about the discs that these camcorders use is that you only get 30min (some only 20min) of video on one and it is already compressed MPEG format, so if you want to edit it, it compresses it again in the end and you lose quality. Also, the batteries on those things have a VERY short run time.

Oh and thanks for all the info, I do appreciate it. I am going to experiment using Nero 6.6 Ultra, TMPGEnc, and WinProducer3 to make a miniDVD with some decent resolution video on it. Suggestions on what resolution I should choose? I record the videos in-game at 640x480 OR 800x600. Trust me, recording at my normal playing resolution of 2048x1536 would NOT be kind to even a 300gb hard-drive! :P

Two questions before I can proceed. First, I encoded a 5min clip to DVD quality at 720x480, and it looks MUCH better than before, but it still isn't as sharp as I would like. It still has a bit of blurr to it. I am using TMPGEnc to encode the video from several gigs of uncompressed (sharp) AVI to MPEG. How could I do this without losing so much sharpness each time?

The other question is about the actual format itself. Like I stated before, I only have a CD-RW drive right now, but I am not sure how to make a DVD image after I create the MPEG. Nero is currently only giving me the option for VCD or SVCD, and I assume it is hiding the DVD option because it doesn't see a DVD+/-RW attached to my system. Is it still possible for me to do this? I have never toyed with DVD creation before.
