Default DVD Brightness control?

Why is it that a movie created in Final Cut Pro, authored in iDVD, is much brighter when burned to disc played on a domestic DVD player and viewed on a LCD TV than the same movie viewed on the same TV but used as a monitor direct from the Final Cut project?

Is the extra brightness just the way it is when 'Burning" to DVD or am I doing something wrong?
