Hi!

Great forum!

I'm looking to get a DVD burner as I need to free up some space that is currently being held up by various large mpegs.

So if anyone could help me with the following questions I would be most grateful.

1) Recommendations on DVD burners to potentially buy

and

2) What is the most basic software you can use to make a dvd (i.e. just get an mpeg and create a dvd with it)? Will I have to do this "authoring" that I have seen a few times on another couple of websites.

A quick reply would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben

Hi Ben, welcome to the forums.

As long as you have a free IDE channel on your PC then pretty much any burner will do the job. You can get 8x burners now from about £60. Check out something like http://www.dabs.com/uk/productView.htm?quicklinx=36HP or http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/comp...quicklinx=30QL

I have the Pioneer one and am happy with it.

As to the 'authoring' part of your question. if you want ot make a DVD to watch in your 'set-top' box then I'm afraid you will have to, yes! I'm only familiar with Adobe Encore for authoring whcih doesn't fit your creteria for being 'basic'. You'll also need to encode your MPEGs into MPEG2 to 'author' your disks so you'll likely need some s/w for that too.

Marc's the Oracle when it comes to recommending good/cheap s/w. I'm sure he'll come along in a minute or too....

Re 2)

I think Nero Ultra from Ahead software has all the basics for what you want. http://www.nero.com/us/index.html

Well I used ISOBlaster to convert the .bin files into mpeg2 format as that was what I was told in another guide, so I guess I'm ok on that front.
