Canon XL1 to DSLR

Hi Guys
I'm finally looking at up grading from a my old faithful Canon XL1 to a DSLR.
However, is the Canon 5D the best one to buy or is there something else on a cheaper scale that gives similar results for the amature film maker that does the odd wedding...???

The 7d or 60d are both very good for video and are much cheaper than the 5d which allows you to spend more on lenses which are very important.
