Thread: zooming in

I thought my pc and tv were designed for widescreen mode. However, I have a movie on dvd which apparently was intended for an even wider screen, because there are black borders on the top and bottom. Is there a way to zoom in on the picture so that it fills the entire screen without losing quality? Obviously the film has a high enough rate of resolution (I guess that's the right word) to be shown on a movie theater screen, so I would think this information could be transferred onto dvd.
I hope this makes sense.

The DVD with the movie on (your source DVD) is DVD resolution. If you zoom in, you will be expanding each of the pixels that make up the image, thus you will lose quality.
You will also be losing the left and right extremes of the images and thus destroying the framing that the DoP set up so carefully.
I'd leave it at letterboxed 22:9.

Ok thanks. So I guess the DoP (director of photography?) is the only one who could change it to fit the screen without losing quality.

Sorry, should have explained. You're right DOP=Director of Photography.

If you had access to the original movie (not on DVD but on whatever format the original was mastered to) and the right equipment you could make it whatever format you wanted at DVD quality. But the image will still not be framed as originally designed.

Back to the original problem, zooming in will lose quality, but let's not get too anal about it, if it still looks good to you, isn't that good enough?
