Default Creating the look of 80's horror movies

I didn't no where to post, so I just made a new topic.
I hope it's ok.

Ok let's cut to the chase. Me and some friends are making
a semi-professional horror movie and shooting on video.
We're at this time not sure what format to record on,
but we are thinking of HDV. We want that look the
80's horror movies, my favorite estethically is(sorry for bad english)
Fatal Pulse
YouTube - Fatal Pulse Theatrical Trailer (198

It's probably a trashy movie, but the look and sound is just
pure gold for me. Another movie who's look I also love is
Psycho Cop
YouTube - Psycho Cop trailer

So anyone have a clue on how to get that look?

A word of warning. HDV does not deal with movement at all well. Bearing on mind that a horror movie might have a number of action scenes... I would shoot some test footage in HDV before committing yourself to that format.

Indeed - avoid 25p HDV for this project - and if a sales type tells you otherwise burn his/er shop !

I dont do horror really, but anything from the eighties needs big hair and saturated colours and totally ridiculous sound effects.

I don't know if it was intentional or not but it has a 'VHS tape copied 3 or 4 times' look about it. To get more ideas I would watch the very first Halloween film (if you can find it), the one with Jamie Lee Curtis and a Nightmare On Elm Street.

Yes -that copy of a copy look is really authentic for 80s horror. It's a cool look that I am yet to find a straightforward way of duplicating.

I think playing with the vegas tv simulator may be the answer - thats unless anyone has seen a VHScopy FX anywhere ?

Ok cool, I don't think that the only reason it looks that way is
because of the VHS. But I think you definatly have a good point.

So if im gonna pull this off, should I use very high quality VHS players and tapes
(or rather law quality ones?) and record onto VHS, then copy the VHS, then maybe even copy it one
more time?

I appreciate the help!

If you're looking for fake 80's horror inspiration, look no further than Garth Marenghi's Dark Place.

YouTube - Garth Marenghi's Darkplace Episode 1 - Part 1

Just as important (perhaps more so) than the medium you chose will be the choice of camera technique and editing. These have to fit both the genre and period to be convincing... but over the top to ensure you get a parady and not just a bad film

Definitely more so imho - see if you can find a book about horror directors and thier films for info.

It's not intended as a parody, I like those kind of movies
alltough I know they are cheesy.
Marenghi's darkplace is more kind of a parody on sience fiction imo.
Defininatly not my cup of tea.
