| | Has anyone here used one of those '35mm' adaptors that aim to give really shallow dof?

| | It's not just the Mini35 adaptor you will need Mark. Focusing is so critical (you still need to shoot wide open to achieve the shallow depth of field) you will also need a follow focus attachment. Locked on a tripod an assistant pulling focus is handy but to go handheld then an assistant with a remote control to the follow focus becomes a necessity. On most of these adaptors the image in the viewfinder is upside down, so an external camera monitor connected upside down to the camera is a bonus

And if you're useful with your hands a DIY mini 35 adaptor http://www.marlathemovie.com/bonus/justfacts.pdf

| | Thanks shiner - I thought I might be opening a can of worms.
Looks like I wont be going tor ultrasharp dof any time soon. The way I film is mostly doc / vp / and when i am doing some 'set up' stuff I dont have acess to the practical or human resources to make it all happen.
I do like to shoot shallow dof for close ups on people but keeping focus is already difficult enough sometimes.

| | Here's is what I do for shallow DoF.
1] Make sure subject is WELL lit.
2] Open up iris FULL
3] Apply camera ND to bring down expo and add additional ND filters if needed.
That's about it! - I've got some samples which I'll try and submit here.

| | aperture control I guess it never occurred to me that while my 35mm camera has focus, aperture and shutter speed settings, my video camera only has focus and shutter speed.
Nonetheless, I was able to achieve the effect using the first tip in this thread (thanks!), although I think the better strategy is to buy a camera with a manual aperture control.

| | Attached shallow DoF using my method with a Canon XM2. Canon has a 1/4" 3CCD chips - not too shabby - huh? |
