Default Film Noir

So what makes a film noir? Is Sin City a "noir", "L.A. Confidential" ?

Can you have a colourful noir?

I haven't seen "L.A. Confidential". I guess I should at some point. "Sin City" is Noir-ish I guess.

Wink

I would argue that nearly all modern film drama is very influenced film noir. What once was edgy and 'realistic' is now the norm.

Years ago I thought 'film noir' was a french black and white film. Now I can see clearly I realise how wrong i was - film noir is a black and white film from france or the usa....

It literaly means 'black film' or film with high contrasts (a lot of dark shadows and highlights) and was first started by German film makers who were influenced by the Expressionist art movement from about the 1910's onwards. A lot of them left Germany when the Nazi's came to power as they criticised their policies and went to live in both the UK and America.
