Thread: What does a matte box do?

I know thay can hold filters but I suspect they also reduce flare and maybe increase image contrast by reducing oblique light that may scatter in the lens?

Am I even close, do I need one?

Yes, you are basically right. They are a good tool for any videographer or still photographer to have.
