okay, i have to shoot a movie for a school project and im working with a Sony Handycam Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar DCR-HC42
My question is, because recording with the memory card has bad quality and skippy video, can I edit my movie if i shoot it with the tape instead of the memory card?
I want to shoot scene after scene, and then edit it on my computer, putting in sound effects ect...
How do I get the recorded material on the tape to my computer for editing.

I have that same camera. Forget the memeory card for video - tape will give you far better quality. To get footage on your PC, you use a firewire cable. This should be connected to the cradle that this camera comes with, and the other end of that firewire cable connected to a firewire card on your PC. Some have them built into the motherboard, but you may need to buy a separate card if you don't have one already. They are cheap though (about £15-20). Then you need to use a programme like Premiere or Vegas (I would recommend Sony Vegas 6), to capture the video. The capture tools will automatically recognise your camera when you plug it in, then you just capture the video in real time. Make sure you have plenty of hard drive space, as uncompressed video will take up a lot of space.

Yes it is, but you'll be sacrificing quality so much that it isn't worth it.

Not of the tape, but of the captured material.
