Default Canon GL2 or XL2

My mom is going to buy me one for christmas, and i get to decide! Yeah sure the XL2 is nicer, and since im making some short films, what would you decide, make her spend the extra cash, or stick with the GL2??

Don't be stupid! It's not your money! Get the XL2! Or better still, can I meet your mom?

FYI:
1. Even the cheapest of the Sony High Def cams will outperform any standard def cam in terms of resolution - even the Canon - guaranteed !
2. High Def cams do standard def better than SD cams - a High Def recording downscaled to SD always looks better than an SD recording.
3. You may think you don't need High Def now, but in a year or two you'll wish you had gone High Def and you'll be looking to upgrade.

Yup.

Sony FX1, PremPro 1.5.1 with Aspect HD - gorgeous !

Once you've seen HD, there's no going back.
