Default Problem capturing with firewire (Sony HC42e)

Hi there.

I used to use a Sony TRCxx (think it was a 22 maybe higher) and captured using firewire, lovely picture all round.

However, it was stolen on our family holiday this year (along with a lot of other stuff). Just got the insurance back and bought this one.

I cannot, no matter what I try get my computer to recognise the camcorder for capture using the firewire cable. I've got the cam in the dock connected to the mains, and the firewire cables into the pc and docking bay.

I've tried it with the docking bay on and off, tried it with almost every setting on the camcorder. Half the time it wont recognise the USB cable and when it did, the quality was so poor I'm never going to do that.

Can anyone help me? What are the exact camcorder settings to enable firewire output? This is driving me absolutely mad, I've spent nearly 2 hours trying to get it working. The reason I bought a new one so soon is because I wanted to film more of my 7 month old son (first teeth almost all the way out now!).

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me barmy.

Ad.

EDIT: I thought I should mention that whenever I plug the firewire into the dock "DVin" appears on the LCD viewscreen, when I remove the cable, that disapears! So I know something is happening somewhere...

What software are you using for capture? Do you hear the 'ping' as you connect your camera to XP?

No ping with the firewire, only with the USB.

Using Adobe Premier Pro but I've also tried the software that came with the camera.

Are you using an onboard firewire port (connecting straight to the motherboard), or are you using a PCI extension card?

Onboard, and as I said it worked perfectly with the last Sony I had (before it was nicked).

Many users have in the past reported problems using onboard with certain camcorders. It's worth a tenner to fit a PCI one. If it doesn't fix it, simply take it back.

I don't see how this could get any worse.

Our first family holiday in years and we are burgled.

Insurance only pay out half.

New camcorder is great, but I have to put up with blocky shit.

I just don't get it, it worked fine with my last one, I can't afford anything else now. Why you HAVE to use the docking station is beyond me, its not even a proper fit really...

As I say, your problem may be solved by the purchase of a PCI firewire card. It's worked for many others in the past. For the price of a couple of pints of beer, it's worth it.
