Hi Jebus,

Maybe I'm missing something here but when I see the words USB and 'blocky shit' in a posting that makes me think the camera is in streaming mode. If the settings were correct your firewire should work and give you high quality pictures and sound, so just to put my mind at rest would you check the settings on your camera.

Something like this should be fine:

You'll need a 6 pin to 4 pin firewire cable as well.

You can get cheaper PCI cards, but from personal experience, I've had mixed luck with unknown brands. I'd personally pay a few £ extra for peace of mind.

P-Menu -> Menu -> Standard Set -> USB-PLY/EDT

The three settings I have are :

STD-USB
PictBridge
USB STREAM

I've tried all three, still won't activate the ping using the firewire cable...

A/V-DV OUT is set to ON as well...

I still have "DV in" on the LCD display, surely that needs to be DV out?

Silly question I know, but WHY do I need to get a firewire card when my onboard firewire port worked fine before?

It still wont work but I can get the memory stick recognised so I can retrieve my photos, but I can't get the video off at all via usb or firewire.

Really fed up now to be honest :(

Default Sony Hc42e

I have the same problem as you. My pc will not reconise the camera.
I have a PCI firewire card 1394a.
From a previous reply on the forum I noted that the cable may not be compatable with the camera.
My camera works with the i link on my DVD recorder. So I am going to purchace a new fire wire cable for my computer. The pins on the camera connection are more recessed on the i link cable that connects to my DVD recorder and it works
How did you manage with your new fire wire card ?

Default Sony HC42e

The new firewire cable solved my problems.
The original cable that came with the fire wire card tested ok with a multimeter but the pin positions were almost flush with the socket.

I have the same camera, the Sony HC42 and I was working on capturing vid for the first time last night and ran into the same issue. Mine also said DVin. And it didn't seem to matter which editing software I used, it wouldn't recognize it.
For kicks, I brought the camera into work to see if it would work on the laptop. I had to buy 4pin to 4pin for this, but i hooked it up, it recognized the camera right away, and I was able to capture from Windows Movie Maker (don't laugh, it's all i have on my notebook).
Now I am curious why it isnt working at the house. with a 4pin to 6pin on a PCI Firewire card.
I will keep tinkering, and If I find something out, I will pass it along.
