Default Portable video recorder?

Im looking for a very simple solution for my problem. I want to have a helmet cam system for motorcycle racing, however finding a cheap camcorder (that I dont care to crash with) that has audio/video inputs is hard to find.
Is there such thing as just a video tape dec with inputs? Kinda like a walkman tape player, but records audio/video to MiniDV or Hi8 tape from an input source?
Ive also looked into PVR's, and found these to be the best (www.archos.com) however, a little to pricy and do way more than I need.

Any suggestions?
