My understanding is that if you don't have a 2/3" CCD then you are not getting 16:9 ratio. Some camcorders will record extra digital video information using the part of the CCD often reserved for Digital Image Stabilisation, but I don't believe this is full 16:9. However, it is a very good half-way house.

Take a look at this page, it explains that the GS400 is a 3xCCD camera, and does indeed shoot "Full" widescreen.

It also talks about the 120 mode quite a bit too...

Again, I am only applying my own interpretation of this very grey area but this...

Quote:
The GS400, however, actually takes a 1.78:1 image from its CCDs and converts that into 720x480 widescreen pixels. The field of view in a widescreen image taken from a GS400 actually widens
...to me implies that by "convert" they mean "stretch" which therefore means it is not shot in true 16:9 (which I maintain actually requires a CCD of the correct ratio to begin with, i.e. 2/3").

However, to be honest, I still get bloody confused about this area.

Me too Lloyd, me too!

All I know is, I get more in the left/right, nothing cut off tom and bottom, and the resolution looks amazing. Really pleased with the camera.

I would agree with what you say from what I have read on my 16:9 travels.

Argento, I just went off to read a review on the camera in DV Spot and it looks very nice indeed. Look forward to seeing some footage you shoot with it.

Thanks, I've also but a Paglight kit, 256SD card, 4 Large batteries, a new fluid head tripod, a SENNHEISER MKE 300 mic - so just looking for a big enough carry bag now!

Any ideas? :

BTW - did some low-light filming last night, and really, really impressed. Very little grain.

Default OK I'm convinced! Pana NV GS400 it is.

AT £713 plus vat I just cannot resist. The reviews have been almost 100 percent positive and I got my hands on one very briefly over christmas. There was a report of some noise pickup from the tape transport from the earlier batches of stock but this has been resolved, apparently.

Its out of stock at the moment but hope they will honour the current selling price..........

New PC arrives Saturday as well Feels like Christmas :!:

My GS 400 duly arrived and after finally figuring out that you have to leave it plugged into the mains overnight to charge the internal battery (it doesn't hold any settings otherwise) I though I would shoot a small video clip and also take some photos while the camera was set for widescreen mode. Not that simple I'm afraid. Press the shutter button in widescreen mode and you get a warning telling you that you are in widescreen mode and nothing else

Still reading the (awful) handbook but overall my first impressions are very, very positive.
This site http://www.pana3ccduser.com/ is excellent apart from the worrying reports of tape transport noise.

Very busy at the moment, so little time to play...........

Whoops! must update my profile
