bittorent sites are mainly community driven forums. They're built around the ethos of sharing, so the upload whilst download is a key feature. Most sites will ban "hit and runners" and frown on people that don't give as much as they take (the so called 1:1 share ratio). Their community nature means that fakes and viruses are rare (but unfortunatley not unheard of). The main problem is badly labelled downloads.

And how can i prove that the upload from my PC is the same file as the one I'm downloading. There is nowhere to set 'this is my shared directory'. I have no idea what is being uploaded from my HDD. No control whatsoever.
I'm certainly not convinced it is the same file. How can it be uploaded at a faster rate than I'm downloading it?????????
At least you are in control of yor own destinay with the likes of Kazaa. Yeah you risk viruses if you're not careful bu at leats you can see what is being uploaded and control what is allowed to be uploaded.
Last night I tried a test. Attempted to download half a dozen files at random. Not a single success!!! The downlaod speed is consistently slower than I could type!!!! Not a single Mb downloaded in the hour I left it running for. And I have an 700Kbps broadband line.
"File size <0 Mb estimated download time 16 hours" - yeah right. like i want to live with that!

You're sharing the file with several people, so u can give the same bit to many and hence share "more" than you have. I'd recommend switching to Azureus as your client for a more user friendly interface. These keeps a track of all your torrent files.
Also, it's only successful if there are seeds (people with the file connected to the tracker). There should be an indication of how many seeders there are on the website.
It's an amazingly simple yet effective means of distribution. Indeed, the BBC are thinking of distributing their video archive in a similar fashion. I was going to set up a tracker for the forums, but haven't got around to the logistics and there probably aren't enough users yet.
You'll be a convert yet. Kazaa sucks big time.

Ok, I'll presevere for a while then.
But how do I control what I share? Where is the 'My Shared Files' settings? There must be a way without opening up my entire PC.
As for Kazaa. It works, Bittorent has yet to yield a single result.
I'll continue to try it now and again but I'll remain sceptible and unconvinced until I see a result from it.

bittorrent will upload everything that you are downloading and if you have finished downloading something and not closed/removed the download then it will be open for upload to people.
p.s. 160 gb Western digital caviar SE on tuesday! yay!

I'm a BIG fan of bittorrent and suprnova.org!
I use ABC for my GUI interface and love it but have Azureus installed too
