Default Canon XH-A1 with Sennheiser Directional Mic Noise

I get an awful noise when recording - I'm sure it is the camera mechanism noise travelling through the plastic body to the foot of the mic and being picked up by the sensitive mic.

I would really appreciate some help. I have had an XH-A1 camcorder since new, about 12 months old, which has been little used and works fine. I recently bought a Sennheiser Directional microphone which is fitted by the shoe to the camcorder and is connected via the female mic socket. I am getting a a lot of background noise/hiss which is the working mechanism of the camcorder.

How can I reduce this sound or remove it totally. Do I need a special holder?

When there is some loud sound in the room it seems to disappears but as soon as it quietens down and during people's conversations it returns.

Many thanks in anticipation. John
