Default What format???

Hey guys.
I have been thinking of buying my first camcorder but am stuck when it comes to deciding which format to go for.
I just want to keep things simple. I'm not trying to be a speilberg, I just want to put vids on youtube and film holidays.

So basically, should I go for mini DV or a memory card type camera? Are either of them seen as future proof?
I want to be able to connect to my laptop easily and use it with iMovie.
Thanks
