Default Camera not recognised

Hi, I have a problem with my new Sony HVR A1P cam. I bought the camera in Singapore a few months back - I live in Brunei (small country on Borneo - with very limited tech support!) and have never been able to connect it to any computer, either using firewire or USB.
When I jack it into my laptop (Asus F3J) using firewire (i-link) the computer does not recognise that it is even there.
Is it a hardware problem? Do I need to download drivers onto my laptop? Install any software?
I have changed settings on cam to try and suit HDV settings. But all very confusing for an amateur like myself!

I am using Premiere CS3 to edit.

When I bought the camera I did not receive a CD.

cheers, grateful for any feedback.
Damon

Check to see if you have a IEEE 1394 Bus Host Contoller listed in the Device Manager first.

I'm not familiar with the Sony HVR A1P cam, must be on sale only in that part of the world but did it come with any installation CD's? If it did, there might be software on one of them that you have to install first to make the camcorder work.
