Default Matte boxes

Does anyone on here use a matte box?
Is it a gimmick, or worth the cash?

My film making is that I'm using my camera to shoot short scenes from features I've written, moving up to making full shorts.

So, if it's worth it...

Just looking for any feedback of matte box users.

Thanks in advance.
