hi all

as i got some great help from here before i am hoping you guys can help me out again

i have recently discovered that i do not have a firewire port on my pc and am not in a situation to get one installed , i am about to purchase my first camcorder and hoped to edit the footage through my pc and upload it to the internet.

Can i still use a minidv camera without a firewire port or would i be better off getting a different type of camera? Or do i need a firewire port to do do anything with a camcorder?

The pc I'm typing this on didn't have any Firewire ports either but thanks to a spare PCI socket inside the computer, I know have 3 Firewire ports. You will need to take off the side panel on your computer and look down near the bottom rear and see if you can locate 2 or possibly 3 long white connectors on the motherboard (the largest circuit board inside the computer) and hopefully one of them will be vacant; this is where you have to insert the PCI Firewire card.

They cost about 20 pounds and you will need a Firewire cable aswell costing about another 10 to 15 pounds depending on length, to connect a Mini DV camcorder to the computer, but do shop around for the best price. You will also have to remove a little silver coloured plate at the back of the computer so the Firewire ports can stick out the back of the case and allow you to plug the Firewire cable into it.

Does one have to use a firewire port to transport video footage to your pc? Are there any other ways to do this, like with a scart scart lead or something that doesnt involve any tinkering with my pc? If i had to use a scart lead connection would that severly limit the choice of cameras i could use?

It is better to use a Firewire connection as this is much easier in the long run to capture from and then to edit the footage. I wouldn't use any Scart, USB contraptions for capturing, most are rubbish and you have to capture the audio separately and it's a nightmare trying to synch the two of them up in the edit. I'm quite certain you can manage to take off the side panel of the computer and have a look inside to see whats there. I tried to do it with the light switched off one night and ended up taking out my own appendix. If you don't feel up to it, take it along to your local computer store and they will install a Firewire card for you.
