I've just bought a canon XL1S - can someone recommend a tripod for me (which isn't too expensive).

Yeah, the ones with three legs.

But no, seriosuly. You can pretty much choose any joe-blow tripod for use. Tripods can get expensive VERY fast. I've seen them easily run up to thousands of dollars for just one. I'd say look around, find a tripod that moves and pans smoothly. If it does, buy it.

I would disagree slightly here. A tripod is not something to skimp on and try to save a few pounds/dollars on. You will regret it one day of you do.

That is a good camera that certainly reached proffessional level in its day (and still does). Put it on a cheap tripod costing only a few bucks at your peril.

You should be looking for a fluid head for that type of camera.

If I had to name a specific piece of kit I would recommend (because I have one) the Manfrotto 503 fluid head on something like the 525 legs.
