This is where you and and many others are wrong. snapping turtles are not swimmers they spend a lot of time just laying quitely on the bottom of rivers or near the edge just waiting for a fish or other food sources. But they are not swimmers.
Now they do get out of the water and do a lot of walking around and climbing. when it gets real cold mine never moves from the tub. the tub gets covered to keep the water from freezing but even if it froze it has zero effect on it.

this happened the first winter we had it.
As for the red slider it's in and out and swims a while then out walking. In winter it digs itself a home under ground not to be seen again till spring.
So please don't worry our turtles are doing just fine.
