Question Computer will not recognize DV recorder

I just purchased a Sony DCR-HC38. I cannot get my computer to recogize it. The computer is an iMac G5, software is iMovie HD. They are connected via firewire. The date/time on the cam has been set correctly. There is no accessible button battery to remove to "reboot" the camera. The firewire cable is 6-pin on the computer side, it is in the correct port, there are no extraneous USB devices connected, I have tried both repowering the computer and cam, as well as disconnect/reconnect of cable. Any suggestions?
