"pixel gross" and "video actual", the difference?

Hi!
me and my boyfriend are about to buy a camcorder and are trying to understand the difference between:
"pixel gross" and "video actual".
Sometimes these Sony camcorders say that their quality is, for example, 2 Mega Pixel Gross and then, two lines below, it sais that the "Video Actual" quality is 1 Mega Pixel.

We don't understand...

Does it means that it is going to record with 1 or 2 Mpx ??
