When someone tells you that the camera's aren't 'true' widescreen they probably are reffering to the either:
The camera will record from the CCD, then slice a small line off the tope and bottom to make it widescreen.
The camera will record from the CCD, then shove black bars on the top and bottom to make it widescreen.
However, I'm pretty sure a lot of "Widescreen" camcorders have 4:3 CCDs anyway, as my HDR HCRE has a 4MP stills option, but when you set the aspect ratio to 16:9 in drops down to 3MP, suggesting it's just cropping the top and bottom off of a 4:3 CCD picture. :/
