I hear that Mini DV's are much better quality then DVD camrecorders. Is this true? I have never seen a DVD camrecorder at work, Is there much difference or is this an old wives tale?

There is a very large difference.

Mini DV is approx 25Mbps using the DV_AVI video codec and very little motion compression.

DVD is MPEG2 running at 9Mbps (max) with a keyframe every 4 frames.

I am glad I brought a mini DV camrecorder.

What about the Hi definition cams are they a completly different format?

The Majority of Hard Drive camcorders record MPEG-2 at DVD standards.

HDV Camcorders, use MPEG-2 at a compression rate of 25Mbps on 1080i video, the number of keyframes depends on the framerate setting, however, HDV cams also have the ability to record to standard DVAvi format as well.
