Am I correct in thinking that the image stabilisation doesn't function in widescreen mode?

Leeroy, To be honest I don't know with this model (can't find anything regarding it on the net), All I can say is its picture quality. Sorry, hope you have a blast in TL.

I'm sorry, my posting wasn't very clear, I was attempting to address the "Service" aspects of your pending purchase rather than the actual purhase itself.

Personally, I like Panasonic, even if I have to rely on Singapore for service and support.

A premature Welcome to the Kingdom!

Thank you for all the great advice and help guys. I've just ordered the SG180. It was a close call because I would have liked the 2.7 LCD true widescreen, the longer battery life and bigger optical zoom, but a lot of people I spoke to still seemed to favour the 180 over the Canon.

Will it matter what tapes I use for the Cam? I wouldn't mind trying to find out if I can get a longer life battery as well for my trip.

This is the spare battery I use on my GS75, lasts a long time. The manufacturers code is CGA-DU14. They also do a CGA-DU20 which I'm lead to believe lasts longer.

    Panasonic.

    Excellent manual controls.

Extra batteries(cgdu14 or equivalent. Longer life but not oversize for the cam) and tapes as already mentioned. If you are unable to capture then you will run out of tapes quickly.

Remember to keep the moisture absorbant silican thing and put it in your camera bag, it will help to combat any humidity. Also think about raynox DVR1001 conversion lenses £50 ish from jessops, there is a .6 wide angle and 1.5 telephoto in a plastic case, they are small and compact and fit directly to the cam without adaptor rings.

Would you consider it ok to buy alternative brands to the Panasonic as an equivilent to the CGA-DU14? Or could it cause problems somehow?

    Thanks

I'm not very clued up on things like this, so apologise in advance. It is something I wish to expange my knowledge on though...
Can you explain to me what these are please and what uses I would have for them?

Im not sure about the batteries, I bought spare batteries for my Xl1s (not Canon) and they work fantastically (is that a real word, fantastically??), last for ages and so far haven't damaged my cam.

They are lenses that will screw directly on to the front of the cam to either expand the zoom or widen the veiw. The wide angle is good in confined spaces or if you have a wide panoramic scene and the telephoto is good to expand the optical zoom of the camera, for those things that are way in the distance and would be ruined by using digital zoom.

The telephoto should only be used if you are to use the zoom as darkening of the corners (vignetting) can occur at 1xzoom.

I have panasonic and jessops batteries and both are fine.
