  1. Where have all the amateurs gone?

by , 04-24-2013 at 05:39 PM (The Digital Director Experience: Video Editing Fundamentals)
Perhaps I'm imagining it, but I'm sure amateur videographers used to be more, well, amateur. It seems everyone's a filmmaker these days. Take a visit to one of the many DSLR forums and you'll find a talking shop of DoPs and guerrilla filmmakers. Where have all the amateurs gone?

Technology has changed dramatically in the ten years I've run this site. It's not just that cameras are more affordable, or that software is easier to use. it's all the other social interaction changes. Hobbyists ...

  2. What is YouTube?

by , 01-24-2013 at 06:37 PM (The Digital Director Experience: Video Editing Fundamentals)
Every now and again I venture into YouTube world. I've never understood why YouTube exists and my casual trips onto its pages never really provide an answer. Take a look at the top 10 videos and you'll see a stream of badly filmed videos with no real interest (other than the type of interest generated by people doing "crazy shit"). Dig deeper and you find more.

But every visit, there's something I see more of. Ads. Wait 2 seconds to skip. Wait 5 seconds to skip. (Bizarrely, ...

I'm working in Adobe Premiere CS6, so you can imagine the GUI.

I started out with the clip and audio on track #1. I use track #2 as another audiotrack for voice, when it is underneath another clip. track #3, #4 and #5 are ment for ...
  4. Optimising a laptop for video editing

by , 04-24-2012 at 09:02 PM (The Digital Director Experience: Video Editing Fundamentals)
If you've read my ramblings before, you'll know all about my unhealthy obsession with laptops for editing. The editing elite dictate that laptops shouldn't be used for editing. These people clearly live in a house with an editing studio featuring 50 screens and a separate hard drive for each video file.

I always judge my system performance on whether I want to throw the laptop out of the window. I'm not really interested in shaving 5 seconds off my boot time, or live previews of 25 ...

  5. Space, Geeks and wasting money

by , 04-11-2012 at 06:48 PM (The Digital Director Experience: Video Editing Fundamentals)
I've been sniffing around ways to waste money over the last few days. You know how it is. You fool yourself into thinking you need that new bit of kit, when really what hou need is to get out and be productve. My latest obsession is backing up, and boy can you spend a pretty penny on external harddrives. So it's proven an admirable a perfect way to waste a few hundred quid. Thing is, it's probably one of the rare times when my passion for spending is justified. I've been caught out by drive failures ...
