Default windows XP not allowing video capture from firewire!

Nothing has changed on my PC, Im using windows XP and a sony camcorder to capture via firewire/ premiere pro. When i turn the camcorder on, it comes up with the capture screen but immediately turns itself back off so I cant capture anything!

Ive tried two different PC's, different camcorders, different firewire leads etc. Ive also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers on XP but it makes no difference. In the device manager the camera appears for a second then disappears straight away.

Any ideas?

THanks.
