Default Cant view sequence in Premiere 1.5

Hello there,

I'm new to video editing and i just got Premiere Pro 1.5.
There seems to be a problem with the monitor , I can't view anything in the sequence window. All the other windows are fine, just that sequence part wont play any video. Audio works fine and when i press play, i just get these little white grains occasionaly here and there.
The file i'm trying to use is an avi encoded with xvid.

K well, I just found out that xvid doesn't work with premiere.
So I need to convert the file right?
To which format?
Any suggestions on the best programme?

I definitely cant afford a reduction in quality or loss of any frames.
