Default pro 1.5 crash

i have a problem using premiere pro 1.5. when i import an avi and put it to the time line a conforming message bar appear below and when it reach to full bar the premiere does not response at all. i cant do anything but to end it with the task manager. what may be the possible cause of this problem. i have an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ and a 1 gig ram and 128mb video card. i use 160 Gig HD just for my video project. pls. help i really need to finish my project as soon as posible and im a beginer in using premiere.
