This is probably a stupid question but please be gentle,how could I gradually slow and then speed up a clip in a smooth motion in premier? Thanks for any help.

Sorry,I did'nt say that what I have been doing is just cutting a section of the clip,then in the duration simply reducing the speed,this works but is not fluid enough. Sorry about the novice questions.

You can't
Premiere can only slow a clip down or speed it up, universally. The technique you speak of will require After Effects and time remapping

Or you can spend money on a plugin like Twixtor and then do it in Premiere.
AE will do a servicable job on this for sure, but it is not a patch on twixtor.
