Default Quality of exports

I import the footage from my dvcam and edit it and export to movie. it looks GREAT as DV AVI but as you all know the size is huge. when i try and export the same edited footage as a dvd the quality is not NEAR as good as the AVI quality that i had. i was under the impression that dvd was quality that was better than tape... does anyone know if im doing anything wrong or do you guyes all notice quality difference between dvd and DV AVI???
