Best software and format?

Hi

After much help from this forum ive managed to start getting my old vhs tapes onto my PC in Mpeg 2 format. Which is prefect for burning straight to DVD.

Now i want to begin editing and I am wondering, what is the best format to edit in? Ive heard you cant really edit in MPEG, so what should I convert to for editing purposes, and what software should I use to do so?

I am also thinking of getting Adobe premiere, which should I get, Elements or Pro?

it depends soley on what you plan to do with the software on whether you want pro or elements, i'd suggest you edit in uncompressed dv, you should be able to just convert it into this format with premiere.

You should be able to capture to DV-avi, and edit it.

you should, but that not always the case as with my hardware neither capture card will capture in anything but mpeg, makes me angry and i dont really want to buy more software to capture in dv

Well I was hoping that if ive got it all on my PC as Mpeg I dont have to capture everything again to edit! I just want to be able to edit the videos, add music, transitions, text, change stuff like color, hue etc etc Nothing too hectic, im guessing I should go for elements?

Elements is a nice app, but doesn't support MPEG. (It will be a pain to edit without converting).

What hardware do you have? What are you capturing from?

my geforce fx 5600 and an aver dvd ezmaker, neither are compatible with premiere

Hmmm, i downloaded the trial of Adobe Premier Elements. Been playing around and am quite impressed by its ease of use. Anyway, I loaded some of my TMPGEnc encoded MPEG 2 files into it and saved them as DV, then did some editing and saved the final file as DV. Unfortunetly the final file isnt as "smooth" as the original and at some points the audio goes out of sync. Any ideas why?
