Default certain clips go blank after rendering

it's REALLLLLY starting to annoy me, and i'm tired of searching aimlessly throughout countless forums... anyway, i put together a video comprised of various clips done on 8mm, tranferred via Firewire... some clips just go blank (audio is still there) after i render and preview... could this be a codec thing? i really hope not, because one of the tapes i got video from has met it's maker... i can export the movie, with blank spots, then try to put the missing clips back in over that file... sometimes to no avail...

oh yeah, i'm using premiere 6.0, win xp, atlon xp2000, and 1024 ddr ram... plenty of room on an 80gb drive...
