I am using Adobe 6, and i have exported my film in AVI format, can i copy this straigh to a DVD and play it in a DVD player? Or do i need to export into another format?

You need to "author" a DVD in order to create a disc playable in any standalone DVD player. Adobe Premiere 6 did not have any tools available to create DVDs, but I have created a freeware version of creating a basic DVD disc:
