What is in a showreel largely depends on who you are trying to impress and why. Thta is what you need to ask yourself and work accordingly.
But as a newbie it is hard to see how you are going to do that.... I mean how can you impress someone with your skillss if you aint learned them yet...
but what?
what should i put there?
bunch of transitions? doesn't sound good...
this is why i started the thread.
"short snappy and entertaining" really NOT going to help
And as for a body of work -it need not be commercial work. Most of my rather long showreel is made from films I have made just for the love of it. Draw on work you are proud of - and if there isnt any - its too early to talk about a showreel at all.
You simply put what you consider your best stuff in it. Or stuff you've done that you think shows off the talents you've learned so far.
Imagien you're a job interview and the interviewer asks you what your strengths are in editting. You will give your answer and he will then say "show me some of that then". That's what you shoud put in it.

but when you edit it's not like in after effects. you just glue several shots & put some trabsitions... (it's very general but yes this is it).
any examples for newbies reels?
