Default new user with error message

Just started using PP.

When (having captured video) I apply a transition between two clips I get an error message telling me that I have "insufficient data" to perform the task - but it goes ahead and performs the transition anyhow...Is this becoause I haven't created any handles? or something more sinister.

Using for 2 days now and still haven't lost the "grin" factor

it is freezing the last frame to complete the transition but if you drag the handles in a bit then it will use some moving footage to complete the transition
