Default Camcorder MPG to AVI help please

Hi All
This is my first post, so go easy on me.

I have Premiere 6 editing software. and 2 different formats of video to edit with.
I have no problem with the avi footage from my mini dv camcorder.
However, my friend has 'finalised' their dvd camcorder footage, and I am trying to incorporate that into my video.

They are in mpeg format, I think I have downloaded the correct codec for them, however I still need to render each clip in Premiere.

Is there anyway I can transfer the mpgs to avi, and also change the aspect ratio. The footage seems to be tall and thin.

Any help would be appreciated
Thankyou
