Default Opening a can of worms...

Thank you for the tip on how to bring AVI format into Premiere. I am a first time user for Premiere. I have noticed that it will take several minutes to render edit scenes. For a: 10:00 sec clip it takes: 11:00 minutes to render. Do I have a slow computer or do I need a peripheral to make this process faster? I have used Avid in my classes. Of course the speed is not the problem. How can I make my home system faster and more efficient? I do not want to make my home a complete editing system, just a practice home edit system using Adobe Premiere 6.

1) What is your source material? Is it DV?
2) What are your PC specs?
3) Are you using a lot of transitions and effects?
4) When you say render, do you mean transcode?

If your source is DV, then you won't need to render to preview as long as you don't add effects or transitions. If you buy a specialist video editing card such as Canopus Storm or Matrox RTX.100 then (some of [edit by Alan]) the effects will be rendered in real time.

Encoding to MPEG2 etc is a CPU intensive process. If you have a old PC, chances are you have a slow CPU, and you'll be encoding at a snail's pace.
